Kunekune's are a smaller breed of domestic pig believed to be descended from an Asian domestic breed. In the early 19th century they were introduced to New Zealand, likely by whalers and traders. Once threatened by extinction and only found near the Maori islands of New Zealand roaming around villages, importations have now allowed growing populations to be found in both the USA and Canada.
Kunekune's are known for their sweet disposition and easy going temperament. They are extremely sociable and with their short, upturned snouts they tend to spend their days grazing instead of rooting up the earth and challenging fence lines. Kunekunes are on the smaller end ranging in size from 200-400 pounds with boars usually being on the higher end of that range. They come in a wide range of colors (ginger, black/white, brown/white, black, brown, cream and ginger/black) with a variety of different markings and patterns. They have short, round bodies that are covered with hair, ears that are standing or semi looped and can have two tassles just under their jawline called "wattles"
Our farm is home to four resident kunekunes, Mable, Gertie, Wallace + Eugene! Each with their own unique personality and lots of little quirks!
Mabel is the boss (getting dibs on any of the good snacks) and is an incredibly patient momma! She was the first Kunekune we had at the farm and will always come running and happy snorting when kids are around!
Gertie is always up for snack time but you'll always have to call a few times as nap time is high on her priority list
! Wallace, our curly haired cream coloured boar, is as nosey as they come, always curious of anything new with the loudest happy snort around
Eugene is Wallace's companion and will take all the love and belly scratches, all the time!
